ten things to do in Dehradun, India while learning English at Rose Mount.

Dehradun is the capital of Uttarakhand - a newly formed state in the Northern most part of India. It is in the foothills of Himalayas and is a known tourist and educational destination. Dehradun is also known as "the Oxford of India". It is home to several International Schools, Colleges and Universities. It is an exciting place and the weekends can be jam packed with activities.

Dehradun is 250 kms away from Delhi. It is well connected by bus, air and train.

The ten most exciting activities:

1. Visit Rishikesh.

Rishikesh is where the River Ganga enters the plains and the mountains end. It is a spiritually charged place. Visiting Rishikesh is a life changing experience. The bhajans and the artis sung with deep emotions in the evenings on the banks of river Ganga will surely invoke the soul inside you. if you are not the spiritual kind then river rafting will surely interest you. Rishikesh is just 45 km from Dehradun. A bus ride through the jungle and you are there in an hour. You must watch the video posted by us on youtube.

2. Visit Mussouri.

Also known as the Queen of Hills, the town was estabilished by the Britishers. It is famous for its Church and the bazaar. The weather is just lovely in summers. The evenings can be a little chilly. Just 30 km from Dehradun and you are in heaven. Our students come back with a heavy heart after visiting Mussourie.

3. Visit Katapathar.

15 km on the east of Dehradun is River Yamuna. On the banks of the river there is a small mansion of the erstwhile Queen. You can peep inside and have a look at the riches of the queen and then of course take a dip in the cool waters of Yamuna. never missed by our students.

4. Visit Rajaji National park.

If you are a nature lover you will not miss it for anything in life. Rajaji National Park is home to hundreds of different birds and animals. Your once in a life time chance to photograph Elephants, leopards, deer in their natural habitat is just next door to Dehradun. Our students love it.

5. Visit the Buddha Temple.

Looking for peace of my mind then this is the place for you. In the heart of Dehradun you will find monks meditating and chanting hymns. You can even pray in the temple. It is a very popular spot with our International students.

6. Visit History.

Located in the bustling bazaar is Gurudwara (temple of Sikhs) Jhanda Sahib. It is 500 years old and is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. The paintings and the devotion of the people will mesmerize you. Every year in March a fair is organized here. People from all over the world visit and celebrate faith. It is worth spending an evening. None of our students has ever regretted visiting the Jhanda Sahib.

7. Visit Haridawar.

On the River Ganga you will find that faith, religion and devotion flow as freely as Ganga itself. Nothing can be more soul touching as a visit to this Holy town. A home to sadhus and gurus Haridawar is truly a place where souls come to rest. 60 kms from Dehradun you can take a bus or a train to Haridawar. None of our students has ever missed it.

8. Shop and Shop

Rajpur road is a happening place. You will find the world's best brands and great eating joints. Dehradun is famous for its bakery and it is here on Rajpur road that you will find them. Students from Rose Mount go there on weekends.

9. Go Trekking.

Dehradun is the door way to Himalayas. Meadows, glaciers, lakes, pristine forests, sulphur springs are scattered around Dehradun. Our state Uttarakhand is truly heaven on Earth. You can choose from easy to difficult treks. We help plan the treks for our students.

10. Visit FRI.

One of Asia's biggest Forest Research Institute is a must see place on your radar. There is a museum inside the Institute which is mind boggling. A walk inside the university will de-clutter your mind. Surrounded by forests and home to hundreds of species of birds is a great place to play football too. We regularly take our students to visit FRI.
